See You Next Season!

Stolen bases are one of my favorite things to target in MLB DFS. The reason being, that a player who has the ability to steal bags can have a big day without his team scoring a bunch of runs. It’s added safety in cash games and added upside in GPPs.

Choosing stolen base targets can be difficult, but hopefully this tool can make it a little easier. We are using the rSB stat which is “Stolen Base Runs Saved”. It’s technically a fielding statistic and can be used for both pitchers and catchers. Obviously it’s ideal to target basestealers who are facing a battery who both struggle to stop baserunners. Here’s the full explanation of rSB from FanGraphs and this chart should help you determine who to target:

The lower the number, the worse the pitcher/catcher.

A few notes:

  • The data includes information back to 2010. Make sure to realize the sample size in which each player has. Obviously, the larger the sample size, the better.
  • Sorted by worst pitchers, meaning they surrender the most SBs.
  • You’ll have to wait for the lineup to come out to see which catcher is starting each day. Obviously a combination of a bad pitcher & bad catcher is ideal.
  • The third tab is simply a list of the up-to-date Stolen Base Leaders so you can find how to target.
