I don’t love the idea of battling the Nationals bats tonight, but we really have to discuss how good Junior Guerra has been. Remember that Guerra is a career journeyman who was bouncing around the minors, independent ball and the Venezuelan Winter League for the last few years. Now, he’s one of the most surprising pitchers this season. Over his last nine starts, Guerra has earned a 2.67 ERA and is striking out nearly a batter an inning in that span. While the matchup isn’t ideal, at least Guerra will be able to get away from Miller Park which is one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the league.

We’ve seen a “feast or famine” version of Matt Moore recently. He’s sporting a 2.36 ERA in his last four games, which includes two different games where he pitched seven shutout innings but then got shelled by the Orioles in another outing. Moore is coming off a really stellar game against the slugging Red Sox which was one of those games he earned seven shutout innings. Now he will get to face the Angels who are mediocre at best and will play at Tropicana which is a pitcher-friendly park.

Nick Martinez is in big trouble tonight. He’s struggling against everyone, including a 6.56 xFIP which is the highest on the slate. He’s only striking out 3.57 batters per nine, also worst on the slate. Finally, he’s walking 5.09 batters per nine which is also, you guessed it! Just kidding, it’s not the worst on the slate, it’s fourth-worst. That’s a killer combination for any offense, let alone the Boston Red Sox who lead the league in wOBA and runs scored this season. They are the second best home offense in the league, only the Rockies have a better wOBA but that’s for good reason.
