There are two pitchers on this slate with 10+ K/9 this season. They are Jose Fernandez and… Lance McCullers?! It’s obviously a smaller sample size for McCullers who has only made four starts this season. Over those 20.2 IP he’s struck out 28 batters including 24 K’s in his last 16 IP. He certainly has plenty of upside at this price point as he takes on the Athletics who haven’t gotten much going this season. They rank 25th in wOBA on the year and are striking out slightly more than the league average. I expect McCullers ownership to be low on this slate with plenty of options.

Few pitchers have been better than Scott Kazmir lately. His 10.41 K/9 in the L30 days is fifth-best on this slate and he’s coming off two sublime outings in which he scatters five hits, allowed one run and struck out 19 in 12 innings of work. It was a slow start to the season for Kazmir who looks to be turning the corner and his matchup tonight should definitely help. He will take on the Atlanta Braves who are notably the worst offense in the league in terms of overall wOBA and and wOBA versus LHP. They strike out significantly more versus lefties which should help Kazmir reach full potential tonight.

I hate to keep talking about the Mariners, but how can you not? They are scorching hot right now with the second-best wOBA in the L14 day. They are striking out at a minuscule 15.9% over that span and have showed how potent their offense is scoring 14 runs over two innings and erasing a ten run deficit against the Padres on Thursday night. Now they face Derek Holland who has the worst xFIP on the slate over the last 30 days. Holland has actually only allowed nine runs over his last four starts but that different in xFIP would indicate that he’s running well above expectation. His low strikeout rate (3.42 K/9) is going to make his job more difficult in the hitter-friendly Ballpark in Arlington. It’s going to be 85 degrees and sunny in Texas today and when it heats up, the ball flies out of that park.
